Canal

Artisan Ice Cream

& Pastry

Modiste_Studio_Berlin_Canal_03.jpg

We were asked by the team at Canal to come up with a new identity and interior design concept for the shop in the Hackesche Höfe complex, a wonderful Art Nouveau building with inter connected courtyards.

Using natural materials such as Oak timber, and Carrara Marble we created a classic look to fit with the classic ice cream made by Daniella Barriobero Canal a gelato and pastry chef with exceptional skills. Our goal was to combine classic Italian design elements like the figured glass and the slabs of white marble around the very high tech ice cream counter that holds the ice cream at different temperatures depending on the type of ice cream inside. The high efficiency of the rather cold LED lighting in the counter was  contrasted with the very warm tones of the oak timber. We complimented the stainless steel counter with stainless steel paneling in the walls.

The shop itself is very small and the time allowed for construction on site was very limited. The team in the wood workshop created the whole shop in parts in Rotterdam and installed on site in less than 48 hours.
